Eric Lee-Johnson 1908 - 1993
The development of a distinctly regional imagery is reflected in his well-known paintings of derelict farmhouses, butchered macrocarpas, and other aspects of the rural landscape.
His distinction was that he found himself in spiritual alliance as much with writers as with painters – with the like of A.R.D. Fairburn, Charles Brasch and Maurice Duggan.
When his photographs were finally exhibited, in a show based on the 1950s at the Auckland City Art Gallery in 1992, it was plain that the history of New Zealand photography would have to be rewritten.
